Garry C. Myers III

1945 - 2005

Born on April 22, 1945, Garry C. Myers III had a lifelong connection to Highlights for Children. Even as a teenager, he worked at the magazine, as a mailroom clerk.

Following the passing of his parents in 1960, Garry moved with his siblings to Austin, Texas. He later attended Allegheny College before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1966. His time in the service included studying Spanish at the Army Language School in Monterey, California, and spending two years in Panama as a linguist.

Garry's professional path led him back to Highlights for Children, Inc. and his involvement with Highlights deepened over his career.  In 1971, while still in the Army, he was elected to the board of directors. He officially joined the company in 1975 as a management information analyst. In the late 1970s, he was made President of Zaner-Bloser, Inc., to broaden his experience. He was named president of the corporation in 1980 and served as Chief Executive Officer from 1981 to 2005. He was a strong advocate for ethical business practices and innovative educational publishing.

Beyond Highlights, Garry was active in the educational publishing industry, serving on the boards of organizations such as the Direct Marketing Association and the Classroom Publishers Association. Known for his lively sense of humor, he was also involved with the Direct Selling Association and the Magazine Publishers of America.

Garry C. Myers III passed away unexpectedly on January 26, 2005.
